Dr. Tom Shirley served as the Principal of Wheeling High School from 1965-1990. In his 25 years of service, Dr. Shirley was instrumental in the growth and development of the Wheeling Athletic Program. Through his leadership, Wheeling became a key member of the Mid Suburban League. His focus and dedication for athletics helped Wheeling hire excellent coaches, have great facilities, and achieve much success. During his tenure, Wheeling won multiple IHSA state championships, numerous regional and sectional championships, as well as many MSL championships. Both the girls’ and boys’ athletic programs prospered and grew under his leadership. Dr. Shirley passed away in December of 2012, but his legacy will always live on at Wheeling High School.
