Dean was an outstanding gymnast at Wheeling High School from 1976-1979. During his time at Wheeling, Dean won many tournament championships in all the events in men’s gymnastics. He was an MLS all-around champion, an IHSA district champion, and an IHSA sectional champion. Dean also won 5 medals in the IHSA state gymnastics meet. In 1978, Dean was the Illinois State Champion on the parallel bars. Dean was also named a National High School All-American that year.


Upon graduation, Dean received a full athletic scholarship to the University of Oregon. As a member of the Ducks gymnastics team, he won a gold medal at the PAC-10 Championships. He remains the all-time high scoring record holder on the parallel bars. While later competing with the University of Michigan he received numerous Big Ten Conference awards, ultimately becoming the NCAA Midwest Open Champion. As an All-Around gymnast, he went on to represent the United States abroad, competing against numerous international teams from Japan, Mexico and the Soviet Union, to name a few. In 1983 he was credited with a number one World Ranking on the parallel bars, and was later inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame in 1993.
Dean received the Outstanding Student Athlete Award four years consecutively, and graduated cum laude from the University of Michigan. He went on to pursue a career in medicine, and is now a practicing plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills, California. He frequently appears on NBC’s “The Today Show” providing expert commentary, and has been regularly featured on E! Entertainment’s “Dr. 90210,” “Extreme Hollywood,” and numerous other internationally syndicated programs. Viewers in more than one hundred and twenty countries worldwide have now seen Dr. Manus performing surgery.
