Mark Newman was one of the first great athletes to attend Wheeling High School. Mark excelled in football, basketball, and baseball. He started on all three teams in the first two years of Wheeling’s existence. In 1966, Mark was named to the All-Conference baseball team. Mark earned a scholarship to play baseball at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale and played on their 1969 College World Series team. When his playing career ended, Mark served as an assistant baseball coach at Southern Illinois and later was the head baseball coach at Old Dominion. Since 1989, Mark has worked for the New York Yankees. He was instrumental in building the Yankees teams that won the 1996, 1997, 1999, and 2000 World Series Championships. At the time of his induction into the Wheeling Athletic Hall of Fame, Mark was the Senior VP for baseball operations for the Yankees.
