Jim Nagel helped build the dynasty that was Wheeling cross-country and track in the 1980’s. As the long-time coach of both boys’ and girls’ cross-country programs, Jim led his teams to unparalled success. Coach Nagel’s girls’ teams won I.H.S.A. State Cross-Country titles in 1979, 1983, 1984, and 1986; and finished second in State for 1981. His boys’ team finished third in the 1984 I.H.S.A. State Cross-Country meet. In track and field, Jim’s teams won multiple MSL and divisional championships, both indoor and outdoor. Jim was named the Girls’ Cross Country Coach of the Year in 1981, 1983, 1984, and 1986. Also in 1986, Illinois Runners Magazine selected Jim as the Distance Coach of the Year. In addition to these accomplishments, Coach Nagel is also credited with starting the Wildcat Cross Country Invite, the MSL Indoor Track Meet, and the Wildcat Relays.
