Mike was an outstanding gymnast at Wheeling High School from 1990-1993. As a gymnast, Mike was a 4-year varsity letter winner. Mike holds the school record in the all-around event and excelled on the pommel horse and horizontal bar. In 1992, Mike was the IHSA regional champion in the all-around. At the 1993 I.H.S.A. State Gymnastics meet, Mike was All-State in the pommel horse with a 5th place finish. In that same year, Mike was the I.H.S.A. State Champion in the horizontal bar.
