Michael Burke Jr. was one of the finest all around athletes in the history of Wheeling High School. Since opening in 1966, Mike is the only athlete to earn 12 varsity letters. He accomplished this while achieving straight A’s in his classes. Mike was a four-time letter winner in the sports of cross-country, wrestling, and track and field. In cross-country, he was a four-time MSL all conference runner and a four-time state qualifier. In 2000, his team was the IHSA regional and sectional champions, and finished 2nd in the state. His 2001 team was the MSL and regional champion. In wrestling, Mike was a four-time MSL place winner and a two-time sectional qualifier. In 2003 he was an IHSA regional champion. Mike was also part of the 2002 and 2003 MSL East Division champions and 2001 and 2003 IHSA regional champion teams. In track and field, Mike was a state qualifier in the 3200m run in 2003. Mike was also the District 214 Lester Award winner and named to the 2002-2003 IHSA All-Academic Team.
